The Management Experiment that is Yahoo

One Last Yahoo Reorg Missive: Bartz Tells Employees What She Already Said. Again. | Kara Swisher | BoomTown | AllThingsD

It's nice to have people like Kara so engaged in companies, while at the same time having a company like Yahoo that seems so open to its ongoing saga, whether from the top or from the worker bees.

The memos over the last weeks reveal a just do it attitude, which very much appeals to me. Often there is too much strategizing in business, and not enough executing. Carol of course needs to address the strategy question for Yahoo as there are still choices to be made as to which products will be 'awesome'. But I've got the feeling she is not going to over-complicate that process. Meanwhile, she just knows that a smaller team of empowered execs under her will simply be more successful than the previous set up.

There are two areas around execution - the right people and the 'executing like hell'. Choices on team, and simplicity of organization can do so much to make this easier, rather than harder. As a leader too, she already seems to drive for that common thread I see through Good to Great, Jack Welch, Mintzberg and others. Effective leaders are not those who distance themselves from the detail of the business “…but quite the opposite; they are the ones who immerse themselves in it, while being able to abstract the strategic messages from it”
This means a dual ability - to be able to grasp the big picture but then able to understand the part we each play as an individual in implementing it. This will be something to watch out for in her choices and communications.

It also feels like it could be a good time for yahoo, as the global recession hits Google too, Microsoft still flails, and its products on search, mail and media actually seem to be holding and gaining share.
