Power to the fans - profits to the bands | Money | The Guardian
Prince gave his album away with a crummy UK Sunday paper, Radiohead invited their fans to decide how much they want to pay for their new album. These are interesting developments for players big enough to be out of contract and bypass the labels (much like the South Park deal with Viacom).
But this article picks up some interesting activity amongst the little guys. The website SellaBand gives music lovers the chance to invest in up-and-coming acts - and make some money out of them if they hit the big time. Others are using the network potential of our rapidly building connections. The fans are paid to anonymously review tracks. Scouts typically earn between 5p and 25p per review. The better at scouting you become, the more you are paid.
