Why as it gets easier to spread information would knowledge concentrate?

As you might tell, I had some time on holiday in Tuscany to read some articles and reflect on them. Which was nice!
In HBR July, they had some edited remarks from HBS's Business Historian, Geoffrey Jones. He seems to have the type of job I might enjoy one day. I wonder what sort of impact he has on any actions today through his longer view insights.
It is provoking that while
"we now have the technologies that should enable the faster diffusion of knowledge, yet knowledge and wealth not only remain geographically concentrated but seem to be concentrating further in a world that is much less 'flat' than it was before 1914"
Our social selves must be a powerful draw; and places themselves support the brand - financial services from London, perfumes from Paris.
He seems to say that this is a seminal moment - when, after the American century, after the British empire, the world regains its balance; and that sustainability must become an integral part of doing business.
