The rise and rise of correlation - ft.com

It does seem that returns are following the same pattern everywhere at the moment. I put this down to the prevailing mood of uncertainty. No one feels they can see clear winners anywhere, and so following the crowd more than ever. Perhaps too, in a depressed economy, there is less innovation spread out over a broader canvas, and so little new news to give the edge to one investor over another.
I am sure the impact of ETF's has accentuated the effect in this market, but I think that when regions and companies start really kicking into different gears of the world post recession, we'll start seeing some differentiation again.
