Which way will Pakistan go?

It struck me that I had not heard too much on Pakistan recently. Considering the huge flooding of 6 months ago, I was assuming problems must still exist, and maybe the western media had moved on to the next thing. But the Globe and Mail came high in the search ranking, with a few articles catching up on the flooding and other issues.

As Pakistan nears bankruptcy, patience of foreign lenders wears thin - The Globe and Mail

The post flooding problems clearly persist but it does seem that a mixture of Pakistani ex-pat, locals, islamic groups and charity groups seem to be providing what the government is less able to. Perhaps some villages are even doing better, while others still have traumatic changes to get through. But the bigger picture for me in this country I do not know well, is where does the power go when the government do not seem able to manage well. I don't feel comfortable about weak government in a nation of 170million people, along with nuclear weapons, great extremes of wealth and poverty, controversial connections with more extreme or terrorist groups.
Do US strategists think nation building in Iraq and Afghanistan continues to be a better bet than focused effort on developing a Pakistan into a strong economic partner benefitting all levels of its society.
